WESSEL & COMPANY proudly traces its beginnings to 1958, when the late Charles E. Wessel purchased the Johnstown office of a large regional accounting firm.
Mr. Wessel was a dedicated, community minded leader who was involved in numerous civic organizations in the Johnstown area. He established principles of conscientiousness, dedication, and pride that still prevail in the firm today.
In 1982 Mr. Wessel passed the baton and the responsibility for leadership of the firm to Robert J. Eyer. The 1980s was a challenging time for our region. Known for its steel manufacturing heritage, our region had the highest unemployment rate in the nation which presented great challenges for the firm. In spite of that, the firm grew and in 1984 Barry R. Gilchrist became a Shareholder and provides leadership for the Tax Department.
WESSEL & COMPANY joined CPA Associates International, a national CPA firm association, in 2005. This is an association of independent CPA and chartered accounting firms that provide clients with professional accounting, auditing, tax and a variety of consulting services. This market-exclusive organization includes 144 members in 71 countries throughout the world. Each member draws on the services of the association and resources of fellow members to better serve their clients and manage their firms.
In 2006, the future of the firm was established with the addition of Stephanie A. Stohon and Thomas R. Seitz as Shareholders. Each had served over 16 years with the firm.
The size of the firm reached 40 members.
Wessel & Company celebrated 50 Years of commitment to clients and community in 2008!
WESSEL & COMPANY expanded to 47 employees and in 2010 added two shareholders; Joel Valentine and Patrick Bearjar. A shareholder retired and we advanced a manager, Patti Hudson, to Principal.
